The Inkwell Iron-Ion Battery

Learn to create a simple, safe, and reliable battery for offgrid use.

Our patented chemistry (US10749168B1) is the first of its kind, a 1.2v iron-ion chemistry based on inks that have been in use for centuries with a good track record of safety and simplicity.  Energy density up to 35 Wh/Liter has been demonstrated for LED lighting applications (non-inductive loads).

This cell is made of earth abundant materials, safe, recyclable, and simple to manufacture, without the ethical complications of rare-earths. The goal of creating this chemistry is to provide a battery system that can be manufactured, used, and maintained by the 1 billion humans on the planet without access to safe lighting (see my article Together We Shine for more information). In order to further the development of the project, I'm sharing it for those who might find it educational, entertaining, or useful in their own lives and offgrid use.

We're creating a how-to guide that will teach you how to create and use your own inkwell battery, suitable for remote and emergency power for small devices.  Step-by-step instructions work like a recipe to guide you through your first cell, and further chapters explain how to scale up the chemistry for more powerful applications.  Our goal is to crowdfund the book for use in remote regions around the world, for home users, and emergency uses.
